Important Information Regarding APN Applications

Applications for Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs) to become licensed in Illinois should be available in early April 2001. In order to grandfather into this new profession, currently licensed registered nurses must submit their application to DPR by July 1.

IF the proposed Rules for the Administration of the Nursing and Advanced Practice Nursing Act are enacted as written, registered nurses must meet the following qualifications in order to obtain a license:

1. Active Illinois Registered Nurse license
2. Complete work history since graduation from an APN program
3 Certifications from any state in which previously licensed as an APN
4. Copy of national certification (certificate or pocket card accepted) from:

Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist

  • Council on Certification of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists

  • Council on Re-certification of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists

5. Official school transcripts with school seal affixed to substantiate proof of successful completion of a post-basic APN formal education training program in your specialty,

OR

Official transcripts with school seal affixed to substantiate proof of successful completion of a master’s (or higher) program appropriate for certification in your area of specialty.  Potential applicants are encouraged to begin compiling the required documents. For example, contact the appropriate certifying body to begin the process of obtaining a current copy of your certification or pocket card, and begin obtaining your official school transcripts of your post-basic advanced practice formal education program in the area of your specialty.

Request a certification of licensure for any APN licenses you hold in other states. The certifications must be completed by the appropriate board or agency and returned directly to:
