How Nurses Become CRNAS

CRNAs must.....

  • Graduate from an approved nursing school

  • Hold a current state RN license

  • Complete a minimum of one year in critical care nursing

  • Graduate from a nurse anesthesia education program accredited by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs. All five Illinois programs grant master’s degrees.

  • Successfully complete the certification examination administered by the AANA Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists.

  • Comply with the criteria for biennial recertification defined by the AANA Council on Recertification of Nurse Anesthetists.
